Surprise, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team swept the Embry-Riddle Eagles in a doubleheader Friday evening. The Spirit won handily in the first game 8-4, then won in dramatic fashion with a walkoff hit in the night cap, 9-8.
Left-hander Sadie Levandowski picked up the win in the first game, allowing only three hits and three earned runs in five innings of work.
The Spirit trailed 4-2 up until the fifth inning, then put up a four-run inning to take the lead thanks to Lauren Russell's go-ahead three-run homer over the batter's eye. Russell knocked in four of the eight runs plated by OUAZ in game one.
Game two, the Spirit held a lead on three separate occasions but Embry-Riddle refused to bow out, battling back from as much as four runs.
OUAZ held a three-run lead headed into the top of the seventh, but the Eagles tied the game up with a pair of RBI singles. Breanna Gonzalez was the woman of the hour, as she blasted a double into the outfield to bring home Odalys Garcia-Peret for the winning run.
Sadie Levandowski picked up the win in game two after being tabbed as the starter in game one, and she goes to 2-0 on the day.
The OUAZ Spirit had a vengeful taste in their mouths Friday, after being outscored 24-4 against the same opponent a week ago. This week they come back and sweep the doubleheader of their own, outscoring them 17-8.
