FULLERTON – David Shackelford, Royce Clayton and Nathan Estrada hit home runs, and Franky Lopez tossed 6.0 solid innings of three-hit ball in Hope International's 16-0 mercy-rule victory in seven innings on Thursday at Amerige Park.
The Royals compiled a five-run third and eight-run sixth to earn their fourth shutout victory of the season.
After going 10 straight games without a home run, the Royals have slugged six in the last four.
Lopez retired nine of the first 11 Eagles he faced, allowing just a walk and a single through the first three innings.
HIU took a 1-0 lead on Shackelford's solo shot in the third. The Royals executed two double steals in the inning, capitalizing both times with Colby Moran notching an opposite field two-RBI double to score Isaiah Lane and Hunter Essang.
Spencer Davis had an RBI sacrifice fly to score Moran to increase the lead to 4-0. After Estrada and Eddie Cotto stole bases to get into scoring position, Cotto came home on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead.
HIU scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Royals sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth, doubling their lead courtesy of Clayton's three-run shot and an Estrada grand slam. It was Clayton's fifth home run of the year and Estrada's first.
Lopez struck out a career-high nine and yielded just three hits in his six scoreless innings. He improved to 4-2 on the season.
HIU pelted ERAU starter Noah Tschopp for seven runs in 3.0 innings. He dropped to 2-4 overall.
The two teams saddle up for a Friday doubleheader, featuring two seven inning games. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
