They say there is nothing like home cooking and the Park University Gilbert women's basketball filled up on it Thursday night. Behind a career high 17 points from Jelissa Julmist, the Buccaneers handed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University a 70-63 defeat at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz.
The Buccaneers move to 9-10 on the season overall and 4-6 in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference. They are 7-0 at home this season.
The Buccaneers who for the past year and a half have lived and died by the three took a different tack against the Eagles. Due to their three-point shooting woes of late, they decided to take advantage of their bigs in the paint. Julmist led the way dropping 17 points and corralling eight rebounds. She went 7-7 from the free throw line.
After only making one three-pointer on 26 shots in its last game. Park Gilbert's new strategy to work inside out left the Bucs with a few more open looks and they returned to form, knocking down seven trifectas on 21 shots for a 33 percent shooting mark.
Embry started the game scoring the first three points but after Park took a 4-3 lead with 7:18 to go in the first frame, they would never trail again. The Bucs opened a seven-point lead after the first quarter and extended their advantage to nine at the half.
The second half saw the Bucs open the lead as large as 14 points, and the Eagles never got closer than six points the rest of the game.
In addition to Julmist's17 and 8, freshman Symirah Gray added 12 points and three assists. Alynna Palacios led the team with nine boards, four assists and six steals.
The Bucs also valued the basketball, making a season-low 10 turnovers while forcing the Eagles into 18 miscues.
The Buccaneers will now try to continue its home win streak but will have to do it as a home team in an opponent's gym. Unable to play at Arizona Athletic Grounds on Saturday, January 31, the Bucs will host OUAZ at Benedictine Mesa's home gym the BENU PEC at 12 p.m.
