Mikey Murr hit his second grand slam in the last three games as The Master's knocked off No. 11 William Carey University (MS) 15-1 Thursday at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
The Mustangs took advantage of 11 walks and two hit batters given up by Crusaders's pitchers to get a win in a game that was called after seven innings were completed.
TMU scored five in the first, six in the third and four in the fifth to get their 15 runs on just seven hits. William Carey had their one run in the top of the sixth and out hit the Mustangs nine to eight.
For the second time this season, Ty Beck led off the game with a home run. This time he drove the third pitch he saw from Crusaders starting pitcher Matthew Davis over the right-center field fence to put Master's on the board.
Moments later Jack Drew's groundout scored Isaiah Morales from third to make it 2-0. A wild pitch plated Cole Rohlmeier, and then Johan Pelayo slapped a base hit to right to score two to make it 5-0 Master's.
It was Pelayo's first collegiate hit and first RBIs.
In the third, TMU loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks. After a lineout held the runners, Scotty Pieper got hit by a pitch to bring across Mikey Murr. That was followed by a Beck walk to score Zach Jenkins and then a Morales sacrifice fly to score Pelayo. Back-to-back errors by the WCU defense brought Beck, Pieper and Rohlmeier across the plate to make it 11-0 Mustangs.
Two innings later, Murr hit his grand slam to make it 15-0. A pair of doubles in the sixth brought in the one Crusaders run to make it a 15-1 final.
Beck, Murr and Jenkins each collected a pair of hits in the game. Murr finished with five RBI while Drew knocked in three.
Gage Webster got the win after pitching 4.0 shutout innings in relief. Jace Russel was the opener, getting a 1-2-3 first inning before turning the ball over to Webster.
The two teams will be back on the diamond Friday for the second game of the 4-game series. First pitch at Lou Herwaldt Stadium will be at 2 p.m.
