For the first time in program history, Benedictine Mesa men's basketball defeated nationally ranked
No. 2 Arizona Christian, delivering an 82–70 upset that will be remembered as a defining moment for the Redhawks.
First Half:
Arizona Christian opened strong, jumping to a 5–0 lead behind
Jay Lee, but Benedictine Mesa quickly answered.
Isaiah Howard drilled a three to get the Redhawks on the board, and
Kamron Robinson added a layup to keep it close. After ACU stretched the margin to 10–5, Benedictine responded with a 10–5 run capped by
Malik Payton's three-pointer to tie the game at 10–10.
The Redhawks continued to trade blows with the Firestorm.
Luis Marin hit a mid-range jumper,
Eric Blackwell knocked down a three, and Robinson scored inside to give Benedictine its first lead at 17–16. ACU regained a slim edge late, but Zivak's free throws and Marin's clutch three tied it at 29–29 before ACU closed the half ahead
33–29.
Second Half:
The Redhawks came out of the locker room on fire. Howard sparked the comeback with back-to-back layups and two free throws to give Benedictine a 35–33 lead.
Damian Zivak added a jumper, and Dunn scored inside to make it 42–37. From there, the Redhawks unleashed a game-changing run.
Marin scored twice in the paint, Payton drilled a three and converted the and-one for a four-point play, and Marin added another layup off a steal. By the 10-minute mark, Benedictine led
54–39, completing a stunning 25–10 surge since halftime.
Arizona Christian tried to rally, cutting the margin to 57–70 on a Cain three, but Benedictine Mesa answered every punch. Robinson hit clutch free throws and a layup, Howard added two more at the stripe, and Marin buried a dagger three with 2:47 left to push the lead to 77–57. From there, the Redhawks coasted to a
82–70 victory, sealing the first win against ACU in program history.
