ATHERTON, Calif. – Led by senior forward, Greg Chew’s eighth double-double of the season, the San Diego Christian College Hawks earned a 68-63 road victory over second-place Menlo College. The win allowed SDCC to split the season series with the Oaks and improved their record to 4-7 overall and 3-7 in the GSAC.
The Hawks struck first after Cameron Dashiell pulled in a defensive board and dished it to Chew. The fast break opportunity was completed by Chew earning him the first of his game-high 29 points. Taking advantage of Menlo misses, Ausage Siamu, Jonah Felix and Chew would combine to build a 7-point SDCC lead after the first five minutes.
Menlo would answer soon after with 7 unanswered points to knot the game at 12. Chew would build the lead back to 5 for the Hawks on successive possessions. He would first score on a jumper just outside the paint and then after stealing the ball on the defensive end, he would drain a three-pointer. The first half would continue the back-and-forth between the two teams, with nine lead changes occurring over the final nine minutes and the final two coming in the last minute of play. SDCC’s Ryan Blackmon and Jonah Felix made successive layups to take a 1-point lead, only to have a buzzer-beating jumper from Menlo flip the script.
With very vocal support from the Hawks women’s team as well as numerous traveling fans, San Diego Christian College enjoyed what felt like a home-court advantage the entire evening. That encouragement helped SDCC down the stretch.
After exchanging the lead nine more times over the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Hawks would take the lead back for good thanks to Greg Chew. After grabbing an offensive board, Chew was fouled on his successful put-back attempt and then drained the free throw to complete the and-1 play and give SDCC a 1-point advantage. Rooted on by the traveling fans, Chew would make back-to-back layups to complete his 7-point solo unanswered run giving San Diego Christian a 5-point advantage with just under three minutes remaining.
Menlo made it a one-possession game after making a three-pointer, but senior Cameron Dashiell answered with less than a minute remaining draining a back-breaking three of his own. The Oaks would resort to desperation fouling over the final 30 seconds, but unfortunately for them, the ball was in the hands of Chew who coolly converted the final two shots to go a perfect 6-6 from the line.
