2009 MEN’S SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

  • September 7, 2009
    • Defensive Player of the Week
      • Aaron Fenlason – Biola
      • Sophomore – 6-1 – Goalkeeper – Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
      • Sophomore Aaron Fenlason turned away 6 shots, including 2 on net, to record his third-straight shutout to start the season and lead Biola to a 5-0 victory over Trinity International IL. The sophomore was forced to make just 2 saves, including a diving stop on a wide-open, point-blank shot in the 26th minute. Fenlason is 3-0-0 on the year and has yet to allow a goal in 2009. He has put together a scoreless streak of 282 minutes dating back to last season.

      • Sophomore – 6-0 – Defender – Indjija, Serbia
      • Junior Tomislav Colic had an assist in each of No. 22-ranked Vanguard’s first 2 games of the season in a win over La Sierra and a loss to No. 11-ranked Hastings NE. He topped the week off with his first collegiate multi-goal game, posting a hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Doane NE. Colic registered 8 points in 3 games last week, surpassing his total for the entire year last season.

      • Tyler Stromberg – Azusa Pacific
      • Sophomore – 6-0 – Goalkeeper – Renton, Wash.
      • Senior goalkeeper Tyler Stromberg made 7 saves to help preserve No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific’s 2-1 win over No. 3-ranked Notre Dame OH, and he stopped 5 more for the shutout in the Cougars’ 6-0 win at Mobile AL. Stromberg was selected as the NAIA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

      • Brett Taylor – Azusa Pacific
      • Junior – 6-0 – Defender – Westlake Village, Calif.
      • Junior defender Brett Taylor scored the second-half game-winning goal in Azusa Pacific’s 2-1 win over No. 3-ranked Notre Dame OH. He scored a first-half goal that gave the No. 5-ranked Cougars a 2-0 halftime lead in their 6-0 win over Mobile AL.

      • Sophomore – 6-1 – Goalkeeper – Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
      • Sophomore Aaron Fenlason continued his season-opening scoreless streak, recording his fifth-straight shutout in Biola’s 4-0 win over Soka. The sophomore faced 5 shots but did not have to make a save in the victory. Fenlason’s streak is the longest such streak to open a season in the program’s 49-year history.

      • Jesus Ramos – Hope International
      • Sophomore – 5-11 – Forward – Norco, Calif.
      • Sophomore Jesus Ramos had a part in both goals scored by Hope International in a 2-0 win at Dominican. He assisted on the game-winning goal and then scored another goal later in the game.

    • Defensive Player of the Week
      • Matthew McNab – Westmont
      • Freshman – 6-0 – Goalkeeper – Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
      • Westmont’s freshman goalkeeper Matthew McNab earned his first collegiate shutout while making 9 saves in the first conference game of the season against California Baptist.
    • Offensive Player of the Week
      • Joel Peluffo – The Master’s
      • Sophomore – 6-0 – Forward – Newhall, Calif.
      • Sophomore forward Joel Peluffo recorded his first career hat trick to lead The Master’s to a 5-0 victory over Point Loma Nazarene to open GSAC play. Peluffo leads the squad with 7 goals and is second with 16 points.

      • Tyler Stromberg – Azusa Pacific
      • Sophomore – 6-0 – Goalkeeper – Renton, Wash.
      • Senior goalkeeper Tyler Stromberg extended his streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 478 with his fifth shutout of the season, a 2-0 blanking of Point Loma Nazarene (one team save by Azusa Pacific defense). In 5 games since Sept. 11, the only goal given up by No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific came in the 13 minutes when he wasn’t in goal in last week’s 5-1 win over Hope International. This is the second time that Stromberg has been named the GSAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week this season.

      • Sophomore – 6-0 – Forward – Newhall, Calif.
      • Sophomore forward Joel Peluffo has been named the GSAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in a row. In the first of 2 wins for No. 22-ranked The Master’s last week, a 4-2 victory over Fresno Pacific, Peluffo recorded his second consecutive hat trick. All 3 of his goals were significant in tying the match, putting the Mustangs ahead, and icing the win. Peluffo is currently second in the GSAC in goals with 10 and points with 22.

    • Defensive Player of the Week
      • Aaron Fenlason – Biola
      • Sophomore – 6-1 – Goalkeeper – Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
      • Goalkeeper Aaron Fenlason recorded a pair of shutouts, his eighth and ninth of the season, as Biola swept 2 GSAC matches last week. The sophomore recorded 5 saves and faced 14 shots to earn the cleansheet with a 2-0 win at Westmont. He then came back and made 3 saves and faced another 14 shots in a 1-0 upset of No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific. Fenlason is now 9-1 with a 0.30 goals against average for the Eagles. Fenlason was chosen as the NAIA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

      • Marco Ruvalcaba – Biola
      • Sophomore – 5-9 – Forward – La Mirada, Calif.
      • Marco Ruvalcaba scored 2 of Biola’s 3 goals last week to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 record. The sophomore forward netted a big insurance goal in the second half of Biola’s 2-0 win at Westmont. Then Ruvalcaba scored the lone goal in Biola’s 1-0 upset win over No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific with a sharp blast from the left side. For the season, Ruvalcaba has 8 goals including 4 in the last 3 matches.

    • Defensive Player of the Week
      • Mike Radchuk – Concordia
      • Junior – 6-2 – Goalkeeper – Mission Viejo, Calif.
      • Mike Radchuck made 9 saves and allowed only 1 goal in 200 minutes in goal as No. 16-ranked Concordia earned a win and a tie last week. The junior goalkeeper registered a shutout of Vanguard. Radchuk made 8 saves, including a one-handed diving stop, as Concordia played to a 1-1 tie with Biola despite being down a man for the last 87 minutes of the match. The only goal allowed to Biola was a penalty kick.

      • Senior – 6-1 – Midfielder – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
      • Vitor Machado tallied 11 points with 4 goals and 3 assists as Fresno Pacific won both of its conference games last week. In the 5-4 double-overtime win against Westmont, the senior midfielder had 2 goals, including a game-winning penalty kick, and an assist. Against San Diego Christian, he recorded 2 goals and 2 assists.

      • Sophomore – 5-11 – Defender – Mission Viejo, Calif.
      • Senior defender Eric Winblad, the 2008 NAIA Player of the Year, anchored the center of the No. 9-ranked Azusa Pacific defense that surrendered just 7 total shots in a pair of GSAC victories over Westmont and San Diego Christian. He assisted the Cougars’ first goal in a 2-1 overtime win against Westmont.

      • Sophomore – 6-3 – Forward – Hesperia, Calif.
      • Sophomore forward Cito Soriano tallied 8 points last week with 3 goals and 2 assists. He scored both Azusa Pacific goals, including the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 win over Westmont. He then added a goal and 2 assists in the Cougars’ 8-0 victory over San Diego Christian.

      • Junior – 6-1 – Goalkeeper – Corona, Calif.
      • Junior goalkeeper Jeff Redinger made 6 saves and only allowed 1 goal as California Baptist won both of its games in the last week of the regular season. He saved all 5 shots to get his third shutout of the season in a 3-0 upset of No. 24 Concordia. It was just the Lancers’ second win ever over a ranked team.
    • Offensive Player of the Week
      • Josh Cormier – California Baptist
      • Freshman – 6-4 – Forward – Las Vegas, Nev.
      • Freshman forward Josh Cormier had 2 game-winners and his first career hat trick all in 1 week as California Baptist won both of its GSAC games. He recorded 3 goals in the win against San Diego Christian. The game-winning goal against No. 24-ranked Concordia came in the third minute, and he also picked up his first career assist against Concordia.

    • Defensive Player of the Week
      • Aaron Fenlason – Biola
      • Sophomore – 6-1 – Goalkeeper – Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
      • Goalkeeper Aaron Fenlason had 6 saves and allowed only 1 goal in 200 minutes of work as No. 19-ranked Biola won a pair of matches to advance to its first GSAC Tournament Finals in program history. The sophomore made 5 saves while facing 12 shots as the Eagles and Vanguard played to a 1-1 draw in the first round of the GSAC tournament. In the shootout, he saved the first shot as Biola advanced 4-2 on penalty kicks. Fenlason then recorded a 1-0 shutout in the semifinals at No. 9 Azusa Pacific for the second time this season. It was his school-record 11th shutout of the season, and he lowered his goals against average to 0.64, which is second best in the conference. Fenlason is the NAIA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

      • Kennedy Chongo – Biola
      • Junior – 6-0 – Forward – Lusaka, Zambia
      • Kennedy Chongo recorded a goal and an assist in 2 matches last week to help Biola advance to the GSAC Tournament finals. The junior scored the lone goal in the Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Vanguard in the first round. Chongo then assisted on the match-winning goal against at Azusa Pacific with just 33 seconds left in the scoreless semifinal. Chongo now has 8 goals and 4 assists on the season.
