Cougars, Lancers Take on Pac-10 Teams

For many, Monday Nov. 3 is just another Monday night—a chance to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. For John McCain and Barack Obama, it’s the eve of what is sure to become a life-altering experience for one.

For two Golden State Athletic Conference schools, though, Monday Nov. 3 is not just any other night. It’s two schools and two games all on one rather big night.

Less than 40 miles separate conference-rivals California Baptist University and Azusa Pacific University. Less than 20 miles separate conference-rivals USC and UCLA. On one night, though, these four teams will meet in the most unique of circumstances playing on the same night at the same time in a rare and extraordinary night of Southern California basketball where “small-time” meets “big-time.”

On this unprecedented night in college basketball, both Azusa Pacific and CBU will get their chance to shine on a national stage. While Azusa Pacific and USC will battle in the one-year-old Galen Center, some 16 miles west, CBU will be in a similar position against national-power UCLA in the famed Pauley Pavilion. Junior ~ 5-8 ~ Midfielder ~ Irvine, CA

Junior midfielder Jon Fahey recorded a goal and 2 assists as No. 19-ranked Concordia won both of its GSAC games last week. He assisted on the game-tying goal in a 3-1 upset of No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific. Then at Fresno Pacific, he scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner.

Senior forward Bridget Brotherton scored or assisted on 6 of Azusa Pacific’s 7 goals in a pair of victories last week. Brotherton led the NAIA’s No. 3-ranked Cougars from a 3-1 second-half deficit to a 4-3 overtime win at No. 24-ranked Concordia with her first career hat trick, scoring the game-winning “golden goal” in overtime on a diving header to complete the comeback.

Weamer is Volleyball Player of the Week

Senior outside hitter Traci Weamer recorded 34 kills (4.25 k/g) with a .325 hitting percentage, 35 digs (4.4 d/g), and 3 blocks (1 solo) as No. 1-ranked Concordia won both of its matches against top-10 ranked GSAC teams. In the 3-game sweep of No. 4 California Baptist, she had 15 kills (5.0 k/g) and 22 digs (7.3 d/g). In the 5-game win at No. 9 Azusa Pacific, Weamer had 19 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces, and 4 blocks (1 solo).
